Catherine Head
Gift, Fall 2005

As a kid, my “what I want to be when I grow up” list ranged from Tiger Trainer to Pianist to Sushi Chef to Biological Illustrator. With the notable exception of training tigers, I was lucky enough to have a tiny taste of each profession before pursuing Fine Art for a few months at the Pacific Northwest College of Art near my Oregon home, and later, the Academy of Art University, where I earned my Graphic Design degree. I started the fellowship in the Gift division shortly after graduation, and after its completion, I was hired as designer and studio coordinator in Gift.

What attracted you to Chronicle Books?
I admire so much about this company; unwavering dedication to producing distinctive titles, integrity in its leadership and business practices, and its wide variety of interesting material! However, it was primarily the high design standards that drew me here; I’d spend hours in the Metreon bookstore, scheming up ways to get my foot in the door. I later learned that on top of what I already loved about the company, the people are also pretty darn wonderful.

What did you learn from the fellowship experience?
The fellowship program is a rare opportunity to become a part of the Chronicle Books design team. Apart from picking up additional technical expertise, I was mentored by many warm, passionate and talented designers, editors and production experts. During my fellowship, I grew as a creative professional, and learned real-life applications to the skills I had been developing in school. Additionally, I acquired several published projects (which I am deeply proud of) to include in my portfolio.
